TIME FOR TRUST

Commissioned for Denmark’s North Art Triennale Unknown Landscape, the neon installation TIME FOR TRUST (TID TIL TILLID) draws on the history and geography of minority persecution in a statment on rising contemporary xenophobia.

In the wake of the 2016 European refugee crisis, the artist returned to the fishing port of Gilleleje, where many Danish Jews escaped to Sweden during the Nazi occupation of Denmark. The mother of the artist was one of the young children on board the small fishing boats that sailed under cover of darkness, many of whom were sedated to avoid detection.

The work thus pays tribute to the solidarity of the local fishing community in assisting the escape of Danish Jews, as well as challenging the discrimination of minorities in contemporary nationalist discourse.
